How  TV  Distorts  Your  Body  Image

There’s a sneaky force taking over the minds of girls everywhere. Sound like the evil plot of a dark fictional cartoon? Fact is, TV and other forms of media, like teen magazines, have a huge influence on the health of teen girls. What you watch on the tube affects your self-esteem, shopping decisions and even facial expressions (eye-roll much?). But most of all, it affects how you feel about your body.

According to a recent study by the Girl Scout Research Institute, nearly three-fourths of girls fess up to comparing their looks to those of girls in the media.

The “Ugly Betty” Complex
On ABC’s “Ugly Betty,” the main character is forced to face her insecurities as a misfit working in the perfectionist world of fashion magazines. Surrounded by stick-thin models and cosmetically enhanced editors, Betty embraces a unique sense of style, which, along with her size, sparks ridicule from her co-workers. But here’s the thing: Betty is the most normal one of the bunch, braces and all!

Props to America Ferrara, who plays the lead role, for rocking the same healthy attitude in real life that Betty portrays on the show. America, like Betty, doesn’t get blinded by the glitz and glam of celebrity culture. And Betty, like America, feels OK about herself despite her superficial surroundings. Maybe that’s because she knows models are thinner than a whopping 98 percent of us!

Welcome to “The Real World”
Here’s something that might shock you: Celebrities are human! That’s right, the celebs you see on TV get zits, wake up with dark circles under their eyes and have frizzed-out hair days. So why do they always look so put together on camera? Well, you’d have a celeb-perfect look too if you had an entourage of professionals -- makeup artists, hairstylists, custom spray-tanning pros -- to help you get ready for school in the morning, right? And then there are all those other tricks of the TV trade: lighting, camera angles, digital editing.

Glance around your classroom, and you’ll see girls of all different body types. Does TV represent this? Hardly. Even “reality” shows like “The Real World” on MTV almost always cast only those who photograph the best. (Realize too that the most photogenic people are not necessarily the most beautiful.)

Over “The Hills”
Heidi Montag, star of MTV’s “The Hills,” serves up a cautionary tale. The 23-year- old got sucked into the “perfect beauty” myth and recently underwent a 10-hour marathon of plastic surgery to drastically alter her appearance. Among other procedures, Heidi had her breasts increased to DDD size; liposuction on her neck, waist, hips and thighs; and a butt augmentation. On top of the changes to her bod, she had so many alterations done to her face that she’s barely recognizable as the fresh-faced young girl she used to be.

“She was so pretty before, and now she looks weird,” says 11-year-old Megan, a Girl World Daily reader. “TV can be a big influence, but I’ve learned it’s basically kinda fake. Nobody is perfect!”

Miss Quoted

“I rejected some gorgeous publicity shots because they just didn’t look like me. I won’t wear skanky clothes that show off my booty, my belly or boobs.”

-- Avril Lavigne

This is good.

I completely believe that this is all true. I mean, we all can't look like the prettiest people in the world. The truth is, we're all different!

My view

In todays world ...Society have a certain standard people have to follow to be accept in the world.......T.V doesn't make T.V bad......What people say or do on T.V make watching altogether bad.......On MTV, E! , and other station... They have show with people that are hot, sexy and attractive.....You can watch anything on T.V and you will see a attractive guy or girl either wearing the top clothes or none at all.......With commercial today..Most of them at more on facial expressions and you body image......It like none we have to look good for people even people that do not care for us...I think we are the ones thats making life harder for people.....We truly don't let people live there lifes the way that want.......We don't accept people who may not be attractive or smart or even different anymore.....If they are the popular hot Stars that you may see on or believe it or not have what they have...( Ipod , ITouch, IPhone and so on....Then they are lame, stupid, not worth looking at, Doesn't deserve the Respect as a Human-Being........Just like anything in the world, we are the ones that mess it up......If T.V is a bad in fluence on people.......Its because WE made it that way.

my body image

Hey this is Glitz n Glam. I just want to say that a lot of girls have body image problems that make them feel like they should be skinny like models or people they see on TV. But i feel like i am TOO skinny and should gain some weight and don't get me wrong, i eat a LOT but i can't seem to feel out my curves and gain weight. Maybe i should see a doctor............

re: Your body image

My friend has that problem, Its a wierd thing, you eat all you can and you lose your weight when you sleep or somthing. Anyway, you HAVE to see a docter.

Kaelynn Says...

Meh...

I dunno...Yes, it distorts the way girls feel about themselves, some... But I know that... Honestly, I get more discouraged by the girls at my school. They're more real than TV/Movie girls, and the fact that they're so much prettier than some of my friends and I hurts our self esteem more than the fact that celebs are prettier. It's ridiculous...I can see some girl and ask how hold she is (skinny, tan, huge breasts, beautiful) and it turns out she's like, 12. That really sucks, when someone 4 years younger than me is way better looking. I think really, the WORLD distorts our images. There's just no escaping it.

re:my body image

Thanks so much Chunkey-Monkey. I should see a doctor- that is if MY MOM will let me. If i talk to her about it, all she'll say is that, "No, there is nothing wrong with your weight," or it might be different than i think. But i just might ask a doctor when i go get my sports physical about my weight.
