Kristen Stewart Turns Darkness Into Light as Snow White
You know the story about the exiled princess and the seven dwarves, but you’ve never seen K-Stew quite like this! When Kristen Stewart set out to put her own spin on Snow White, she made it clear she wasn’t about to be anyone’s princess. We talked to her about the diff between playing a fairytale icon in Snow White and the Huntsman and Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga.
What’s it like playing the modern-day classic character Bella has become as compared to the timeless traditional tale of Snow White?
Kristen Stewart: I guess the only actual comparison that sticks out in my mind is that they really are, in different ways, matriarchs -- very strong, strong matriarchs. And them both being icons, it’s funny because Snow White was really never part of my childhood; I didn’t grow up on fairytales. I know everyone says, “It’s so cool because we’ve all grown up with this story.” Well, no, not really. I didn’t. I also didn’t grow up with Twilight.
Do you go out of your way to find roles that are different from Bella?
Kristen Stewart: The movies I’ve done between the Twilight films, I’ve just been really lucky that they’ve been very different -- not because I’ve meant them to be, but literally because the things I’ve been drawn to have been different from the Twilight thing.
Can you spill any juice about your next project?
Kristen Stewart: This is the first time in a long time I haven’t known what I was going to be doing next, and I don’t want to rush it because I want to have time off to find out what I’m interested in. Not to say that I’ve just been going, going, going all the time and I don’t know myself -- not at all. It’s just that I want a little bit of time to figure out what I really, really, really want to do.
Are you able to process the impact you have on your female fans?
Kristen Stewart: I love that. I hate when people ask, “What advice do you want to give your fans?” It’s just weird because that question always presents, “So, why are you better?” And I’m literally the same as my fans, which is why it’s so cool. I thank them too. The same reason they like me, I’m sure I’d like them. It’s common ground, and it’s because I’m placed on this pedestal, it looks like, “Wow, it’s so incredible that you can be that way,” but not really. It’s so weird. Trust me, come on up; you’ll see there’s really no difference.
What’s on your iPod right now?
Kristen Stewart: Adele’s album 21. Honestly, I’ve choreographed whole marches with my Snow White army behind me to that. It’s really good for the story -- like, oddly good for it … too good for it. Hits the nail right on the head.
